The person that I decided to job shadow was my mother’s friend Alyssa Ullman, at the Northeastern Laboratories Inc in Berlin, Connecticut. Alyssa position is a supervisor and also a lab technician. When I was job shadowing her I realized that her job can be very difficult at times. She has to make sure everyone is on task and completing what they have to do in a certain time span. The work area where she worked at was very organized. Everything that was completed were in folders, everything that wasn't completed she had in a neat pile and was working on it. When I was job shadowing Alyssa I asked “what did you major in college?” She told me that she majored in business management and hopes to get in that field later on in life. She told me that she wasn't planning on doing what she is doing now. Alyssa told me that some of her business skills transferred over to her job that she has now. She told me that her communication skills that she started to develop in college helped out a lot. Alyssa has to talk to customers and order items through her email and over the phone.
I was very nervous going into the business and was nervous asking questions about the job and helping out. I was afraid that I was going to mess up on her job and she would have had to clean up after me. At first, I wasn't interested in the job shadow because the work environment seemed really boring in the morning. But through out the day, her job became harder and there were many tasks you have to do in a short amount of time. There was this one point where she had to talk to the customer and visit the work area to make sure everyone was on task. She was able to multi-task during that time and I thought that was difficult because I even lose focus of a conversation but she didn't.
The job shadow experience was a good experience for me. I learned that skills from a certain major can help you out in another major or another career you want to do. I learned that you can’t make mistakes with the customers. You have to talk fluently with your customers and make sure you are ordering the right items or the right amount. Alyssa didn't tell me what her salary was and I thought it was rude to ask. But she did tell me that the pay was good.
After the job shadow I realized that supervising a business is a good job. It is an interesting job because you make sure that people are on task and complete their tasks. Also you have your share of work which involves communicating with others and I enjoy doing that. After this job shadow, I am still interested in majoring in business management in college. This job shadow helped me, by showing me what a real job is like. It also shows the important tasks that you have to deal with as a supervisor or even a business owner. You have to be in charge of what’s going on and that is a job that I would want to have.
